Small Cabin Living – Autumn Chores

Life in a Small Cabin

Fall time around here is great. Seasonal employment is done and its time to enjoy small cabin living. This year the weather was fantastic and the scenery, amazing. Everything turned gold and stayed that way for a long time. Completing our chores is a lot of fun. See small cabin life.

I was thinking about about activities that we routinely do here that probably aren’t done by most other people. There are also many things we do that are quite normal and modern, blogging for example. But many of our daily activities are unique when compared to everyone else.

For example, I light a lot of fires. Each day the wood stove in the cabin is lit and possibly re-lit if no one is here for awhile. If we use the cook shelter and stove outside there needs to be a fire. If we have a campfire outside there is another fire to light. Finally, we are installing a wood stove in our shower so that it can be used all year. See video! That fire will have to be raging before it will be any fun to take a shower this winter!

Everyone likes the fires.

Here is a list of unusual activities:

  • Chop wood
  • Carry water jugs
  • Boil water for dishes
  • Wear a headlamp
  • Go outside to the bathroom
  • Light pilot lights
  • Move a 100lb propane tank
  • Start a generator
  • Strike a match
  • Dry clothes by the fire
  • Help hang a deer/elk/moose
  • View the stars and northern lights

There is probably more but these are the main things that come to mind.

We both grew up in normal suburban environments in different larger cities. It’s hard to say what happened to us to end up here.

Here is the list of stuff we don’t do much:

  • Walk across a busy road or use a cross walk
  • Wait in line
  • Walk on a sidewalk (I walk across a parking lot to get groceries though)
  • Flush a toilet
  • Adjust a thermostat
  • Look in a mirror that’s bigger than my face
  • Exercise in public
  • Turn on a tap
  • Watch tv
  • Ride an elevator or escalator

Another thing that I will share that is kind of funny….as if we aren’t weird enough, sometimes we sleep on the deck. This happens even in the winter. If the stars and moon are fantastic we sleep in our sleeping bags outside. If its summer and the bugs are bad, we put up a tent.

Twig also likes sleeping on the deck

Having said that, there are a lot of different things that go on around here that replicate a modern lifestyle. This isn’t exactly the way our ancestors lived.

We are well connected with smartphones, computers and many other electronic devices

I have a mountain sled. (It is great.) We have vehicles for different purposes. We don’t farm or garden.

So this would seem to some (maybe just me) that we have the best of both worlds. There are the chores that require work with no modern conveniences paired with social connections and other activities that require very modern technology and machinery.

Is there something to be gained by mixing old time chores with modern activities?
